A severe weather warning has been issued for Sydney and residents in the Hunter Valley and Illawarra regions.
The Bureau Of Meteorology has said that "strong and gusty winds" are currently developing along the coast of New South Wales.
"Damaging winds, averaging 60 to 65 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 90 km/h are possible.
"A south to southwesterly wind change is forecast to move along the coast, reaching the Hunter coast by late morning. Showers associated with this change may bring damaging wind gusts along the coastal fringe.
"Locations which may be affected include Gosford, Newcastle, Sydney and Wollongong."
The State Emergency Service has advised that people should move vehicles under cover and away from any trees, secure loose items around the house, yard and balcony, and keep an eye out for fallen power lines and any other items that may be energised.
