A police investigation has been launched after a woman in her late 20s was assaulted by a man in Ashfield.
Authorities say a 27-year-old woman was walking south on Bland Street around 8:30pm last night, when she noticed a man walking close behind her.
She turned left onto Julia Street and as she walked into the front yard of a unit complex the man wrapped a bike chain around her neck and pushed her to the ground.
A 53-year-old woman who was sitting in her car parked on Julia Street, heard a scream and went to investigate.
When she approached the front yard of the unit complex she saw the man walking towards her vehicle.
Her friend approached the man and was then punched in the face before he ran from the location.
The woman ran to the front yard of the unit complex where she found the 27-year-old woman semi-conscious with injuries to her neck.
She was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for treatment, while the 49-year-old man was not injured.
Detectives from Burwood Police Area Command have commenced inquiries and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
The man who police believe may be able to assist with inquiries has been described as Caucasian in appearance, aged in his 20s with a tall, slim build. He has a long pony tail and was wearing an orange high-visibility vest.
