A police dog has been injured after being attacked by two other dogs while tracking an alleged offender at Whalan this morning.

A Dog Unit team was requested to assist Mt Druitt Police Area Command when a man wanted for a number of offences allegedly assaulted an officer then ran from the scene shortly after midnight (Friday 27 April 2018).

A Police Dog and his handler tracked the man to a backyard in Whalan.

Despite the handler checking the yard for other pets, when the police dog entered the yard and approached the hiding man, the police dog was mauled by two dogs.

The police dog was taken to a vet and has undergone surgery for internal injuries.

He is now recovering and will be monitored for the next few days.

The accused man was taken to Mt Druitt Police Station where he was charged.

The police officer sustained minor injuries to his forearm while intervening in the dog fight.
