There's been a lot of commotion in Sydney's west, with a man shot by a childhood friend with a pellet gun.

Police surrounded the house - and an officer shot an neighbour's dog - while dealing with the incident in Whalan just after 12pm today.

A property in Pacha Place, Shalvey was surrounded, however the man was not at home at the time.

He later handed himself in at St Mary's Police Station at 1.30pm, and is being questioned by police.

The man who was shot with the pellet gun is in a stable condition at Nepean Hospital.

He sustained wounds to his leg and hand.

Footage has shown vets taking the injured dog for treatment after being shot in the shoulder.
