Could this actually become a reality?
Some members of the NSW Labor Party are taking tenants’ rights into their own hands, considering a policy that would stop all landlords from banning pets from their properties.
The amendment to the ALP’s policy platform that disallows ‘no pets’ clauses has not been ruled out by the Opposition Leader Luke Foley, but Real Estate Institute president John Cunningham says it will “create havoc”.
He added that the idea was “probably the Left going a bit too far to the left.
“It seems that landlords’ rights are getting watered down. There’s no basis in reality on this one.”
The policy amendment would no doubt be highly popular for dog and cat owners of Sydney, who already find it extremely difficult to rent an affordable home that allows pets.
