The head of the independent investigation into NSW Water Management and Compliance Ken Matthews has submitted his interim report to the Secretary of the NSW Department of industry.
Mr Matthews says the investigation was commissioned after the broadcast of an ABC report on July 24; that raised significant public concern about the effectiveness of current NSW compliance and enforcement arrangements for water.
After his initial investigations, he now shares these concerns saying the state’s current water-related compliance and enforcement arrangements have been ineffectual, and that change is the only option.
His principal finding is that water-related compliance and enforcement arrangements in NSW have been ineffectual and require significant and urgent improvement.
The interim report has put forward a set of recommended reforms called the Water Management Compliance Improvement Package.
