More than 320 people have already taken advantage of the new SilverSport program in Bunbury, which allows seniors to access funding that can go towards fees for eligible sport and recreation activities.

The State Government’s SilverSport program – which is based on the highly successful KidSport program –provides up to $200 to help seniors to stay active in their community.

City of Bunbury Manager Sport and Recreation John Kowal said the number of seniors signing up for the program was impressive.

“SilverSport has been so popular that we received 91 applications in just six days prior to the program even opening,” Mr Kowal said.

“We have had people apply for funding that will help them be involved in a wide range of sports and activities, including lawns bowls and even gym memberships.

“In fact, the South West Sports Centre continues to see a high number of new memberships being taken out by people who have previously never had a membership before thanks to SilverSport.

The SilverSport program helps eligible seniors, who might not otherwise be able to join a sport or recreation club, to keep fit, healthy, active and socially connected using sport and recreation centres, seniors' fitness classes and clubs.

Activities can include, for example, masters swimming, bowls, group fitness classes, walking groups, gym memberships, yoga, Pilates and more.

To be eligible, applicants need to live in the City of Bunbury, be aged 60 years or over and have a valid health care card or pensioner concession card.
