The South Burnett has some of the riskiest highways in the state.

That’s the result of a recent RACQ survey with crash data analysed for the period between 2012 and 2016, sadly we rated pretty close to the top of the list.

The Club is asking our politicians to take politics out of road upgrades and focus on urgent safety upgrades such as installing safety barriers, wide centre lines and intersection upgrades, all suggestions to improve the safety of our roads.

RACQ had rated 15,000km of major highways and roads across the state, using the Australian Road Assessment Program rating system.

Nanango MP Deb Frecklington has led the charge for our region writing to the state Government in a bid to get more done for our highways.

Some of the roads identified as dangerous in the RACQ survey are either in our region or just outside – (areas where Gympie drivers might often go).

High risk:

  • Bruce Highway from Traveston Rd to Gympie
  • Burnett Highway at Goomeri to Gayndah
  • Bunya Highway from Goomeri to Wondai

Medium to high risk:

  • Wide Bay Highway (for most of its length) from Gympie to Goomeri
