Health tips are going out to residents of Murgon and Cherbourg after reports that people in both towns have been infected with Shigella.

It is a highly infectious intestinal disease caused by a family of bacteria known as Shigella.

The main sign of Shigella infection is diarrhea, and is passed through direct contact.

The Darling Downs Public Health Unit says the disease is transmitted person-to - person or through food and the best way to manage the outbreak is wash your hands.
