According to Cancer Institute NSW, as many as 70 women in the Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) have breast cancer but are unaware of it because they haven't had a mammogram in the past 2 years!

The data, which was released during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, showed 14,000 women between the ages of 50-74 in MLHD are overdue for a mammogram, or have never had one.

Director BreastScreen for Murrumbidgee and Southern Local Health Districts, Debbie Lattimore, stated that women tend to have the perception that breast cancer is common, but don't think it will happen to them, which is why they don't making schedule mammograms a priority.

While screening numbers are on the rise across the state, 950 women in NSW still die from breast cancer every year. You can reduce the risk of breast cancer through maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle, including exercising regularly, reducing alcohol intake, and quitting smoking.
