A recent youth census investigated the effects of youth unemployment throughout the NSW Riverina region.

Unemployment among Australians between the ages of 15 – 24 averages at 12%, while Riverina youth unemployment sits at 14.6%.

Apprenticeship Support Australia (ASA) initiated the Skillsroad 2018 Youth Census in response to the statistics, to find out the hopes, fears and attitudes of youth transitioning from school into the workforce.

Over 13,000 Australian youth participated in the survey in 2017, and the results showed a “below-average ‘life satisfaction’ and sense of wellbeing, as well as significant levels of stress and uncertainty about choosing career pathways” (SkillsRoad).

Manager of ASA’s Southern NSW and ACT branch, Toney Keir, stated that Riverina youth are facing an employment crisis, and that the report should be used by schools, parents and businesses, to support local young people.

The survey will continue until 30th September to investigate issues surrounding this topic, and youth are encouraged to participate online.
