NSW Health is urging regional and rural NSW residents to take precautions against Q fever, as drought conditions increase the risks of the infection spreading.

Director Communicable Diseases NSW Health, Vicky Sheppeard, stated that in these conditions, the infection can be carried by animals and in dust.

It is important people wear personal protective equipment, such as a properly fitting face mask which can be purchased from hardwares or pharmacies, and that they thoroughly wash their hands.

The Q fever symptons include high temperatures, chills, severe sweats, headaches, aches and pains, and extreme fatigue. Vaccinations are available for high-risk residents over the age of 15.

Learn more about Q fever at the NSW Health website, and spread the word to raise awareness on how best to avoid the infection.
