We're coming into thunderstorm season (aka the WORST season for anyone suffering from asthma or allergies).

Post

Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) Director Public Health Unit Tracey Oakman has advised asthma sufferers and anyone with breathing problems or allergies to take extra precautions over the next month, as "airborne pollens are at their highest levels at this time of year".

In 2016, in Melbourne alone, around 3,600 more people than usual were admitted to hospital from asthma attacks after severe thunderstorms, 9 of which were fatal.

Mrs Oakman suggested that anyone diagnosed with asthma should carry their medication with them at all times, have an action plan, and manage their symptoms throughout this high risk period.

If you have a family member or friend who suffers with asthma, it can help to know what to do in case of an attack. In an emergency you should dial 000 immediately. In a non-life threatening instance, the MLHD gave the following steps:

  1. Sit the person upright;
  2. Give four separate puffs from their reliever puffer;
  3. Wait four minutes and if there’s no improvement, give four more puffs; and
  4. If there’s still no improvement, dial 000.

Stay safe everyone, and remember there's a rainbow after every thunderstorm... We're looking forward to the sunny summer months ahead!
