With continuing drought conditions, motorists are being warned to be aware of animal strikes, as increased numbers of wildlife take to the roads in search of food and water.

According to Roads and Maritime Services, kangaroos, wallabies and cattle are particularly attracted to the roadside for grazing.

With a large area of South West NSW dedicated to livestock production and a rise in the use of Travelling Stock Routes due to the dry conditions, road users in this area are warned to stay vigilant at all times.

Roads and Maritime Services have advised the following safety tips for drivers:

  • Be aware, particularly at sunrise and sunset
  • Reduce your speed when you see animal  warning signs
  • Stay alert
  • Only brake when safe to do so
  • Never swerve – it's safer to hit an animal than swerve and lose control of your vehicle
