A new Pound and Rehoming Centre Working Group has been formed by Griffith City Council.

The group met for the first time this week and discussed how they can achieve better outcomes for abandoned animals in Griffith.

Councillor Doug Curran said he was glad to have enthusiastic people on board to help.

“There has already been strong commitment from Council by building the new pound facility and now we want to explore how we can better work with community members,” Cr Curran said.

“It’s only early days and we have a lot of work to do, but I’m confident that we can gradually make a difference.

“We need to get procedures and policies right and I think having input from members of the community to ensure we are heading in the right direction is vital.”

Cr Curran said all members of the group agreed that pet ownership shouldn’t be taken lightly.

“We will be trying to promote the importance of responsible pet ownership,” Cr Curran said.

“Our group will be looking at ways to best reduce the increasing number of homeless animals, particularly through encouraging desexing.”

“Responsible pet ownership is the key. Ensuring pets are safely secured and confined in yards, microchipping and registration, keeping vaccinations up to date and desexing are all steps pet owners should take to ensure the rate of unwanted, lost or unclaimed animals is kept to a minimum.”

Remember, dogs and cats must be microchipped by 12 weeks of age and registered by 6 months.
