Leeton Shire Council has finally been able to present the Australia Day Awards for Citizen of the Year and Achiever of the Year.
Michael "Buster" Ryan and Bill Arnold were both unable to attend the 2018 Australia Day Awards Ceremony last month in Mountford Park due to being out of town, so the council suspended part of their February Ordinary Council meeting to present the two Aussies with their awards.
"Buster" Ryan has been awarded Citizen of the Year and is an active member and President of Yanco Lions, Leeton Bidgee Classic committee member, and, he took part in the Leeton Community Op Shop Ball raising much need funds for the Op Shop. WIth his partner, Sue, he gained a huge amount of community support to enable them to drive a truck full of hay for the Burrumbuttock Hay Run.
Bill Arnold has been awarded Achiever of the Year for taking the lead role in organising the removal of old seating and installation of new spectator seating for the Leeton No 1 Oval. Not only that, but he physically laid the concrete walkway from the entry gates to the dressing sheds of the oval. The new seating offers a 500 seat capacity, which will greatly benefit the community.
Chairman of the Australia Day Committee Deputy Mayor George Weston expressed Council's gratitude for contributions that both Buster and Bill have made to the community.
“Buster and Bill are both well respected Leeton citizens who always go above and beyond for the betterment of our community. It is a great privilege that we as a Council get to acknowledge and celebrate Buster and Bill for their outstanding contributions.”
Mayor Cr Paul Maytom said he was delighted to hand over the awards to Buster and Bill.
“It’s times like these we get to celebrate how wonderful our community is in Leeton Shire.”
