Did you know… 99% of NSW is in drought?

The statistics may shock you, but thankfully there is a support system for farmers and communities that have been affected by the drought.

Today, the NSW Government announced further support of struggling farmers, with a $500 million Emergency Drought Relief Package. In addition to the $584 million already committed to drought support, this takes the total support to over $1 billion.

The funds are being used to address both the immediate needs of farmers and their communities, and for preparation in case of worsened drought conditions. With this year having been one of the driest winters on record, the funds will certainly be put to good use, making up for failing crops, water shortages, and more.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro stated that conditions have worsened this winter.

“We said we would constantly reassess the conditions and relief measures, and the fact we’ve now increased our drought-relief package to over $1 billion is a reflection of how serious this drought is, and how much we value the health and wellbeing of our farming and regional communities.”

- John Barilaro

The $500 million package covers drought transport subsidies, lowered farming costs, and reinforcement for the Farm Innovation Fund infrastructure program. The NSW Rural Assistance Authority will start processing applications from Monday 6thAugust.
