The Wagga electorate may have to wait until Thursday to find out who's been elected its new local Member, with the results from Saturday's by-election still to close to call.

What is obvious though is the swing of around 29% against the Liberal Party, in the seat they've held for around 60 years.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian has admitted the people of Wagga have sent her and her government a message, and they will now double down, while they work to earn back the trust they've lost.

As of 10 o'clock this morning, the Liberals' Julia Ham had edged just in front of Independent Candidate Dr Joe McGirr, in the lead by just 28 votes on first preferences.
