A pilot aged in his 50s has been hospitalised after his plane crashed into a paddock at Tumut on Saturday afternoon.

The man had reportedly built the plane himself, and experienced engine failure shortly after take-off from Tumut airport.

Police say the pilot did well to avoid a more serious accident.

He was taken to Wagga Hospital  in a stable condition with suspected back injuries.
