Red tape is holding up Wagga City Council's plans to divert stormwater into Lake Albert, as a temporary solution to its water level and blue-green algae woes.

Council has been advised that it can't commence work to put temporary gates in place in the Tatton Drain, because the state government has deemed the drain a watercourse.

General Manager Peter Thompson described the delay as a crying shame, especially in the lead up to the rainfall this week.

Councillor Paul Funnell says council did want to harvest water while they can, and prevent the lake's level from getting too low for ski race events.
