Council looks to Defence for solution

Wagga City Council has 18 months find a solution, after receiving a direction from the Environment Protection Authority not to discharge effluent contaminated with PFAS from the Forest Hill Sewerage Treatment plant.

Council has known about the contamination for three months, since the release of the report on Per and Polyfluroalkyl Substance contamination around the Wagga RAAF Base, and has confirmed it’s looking to the Department of Defence for a solution.

General Manager Peter Thompson says currently, there’s nothing to suggest any risk to ground water or public health arising from the contaminated effluent, because it is contained in storage ponds.

It's estimated those ponds can hold 18 months' worth of effluent.
