Wagga residents are being encouraged to check in with elderly relatives or neighbours, people with chronic medical conditions and keep a close eye on children over the coming days in the extreme heat.

Wagga's set to reach a top of 44 today, towns further west tipped to get as high as 47.

The Murrumbidgee Local Health District is encouraging everyone to do what they can to stay hydrated and out of the heat.

Director of Public Health, Tracey Oakman, says we should be taking some extra precautions in these conditions, and keep an eye out for symptoms of heat related illness.
