A number of fishers in the Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers have been caught breaking the rules, during a Department of Primary Industries crackdown.

A compliance operation was conducted over the opening two weekends of the Murray Crayfish season, catching plenty of people out, 81 people out of 791 checked were doing the wrong thing.

The most common offences were possessing under or oversized crayfish, or taking them from closed waters, both of which carry a $500 on-the-spot fine.
