Police have issued a reminder for drivers to take it easy on the roads over the long weekend, with double demerits in place from Thursday.

Named 'Operation Tortoise', NSW Police's operation will run from 12.01am Thursday, April 18 to 11.59pm on Monday, April 22.

"Speeding, seatbelts, helmet offences and mobile phone offences will all be targeted for double demerit points," Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy told the Hit Newsroom.

"If you get booked for speeding and you were also using your phone, you could in fact lose your licence."

With the ANZAC weekend also coming up, double demerits will come into effect again on Wednesday, April 24 at 12.01am until Sunday, April 28 at 11.59pm.
