There are calls for special units to help manage high risk detainees in juvenile justice, with the Public Service Association saying there have been 24 staff assaults at the Riverina Juvenile Justice Centre in the past six months.

General Secretary Stewart Little says special units would still allow detainees to attend their usual classes, though separation would allow staff to better assess them.

A spokesperson from Juvenile Justice says an assault in this context can range from a verbal comment or threat to a physical assault.

A statement from the Department also says any staff member involved in a physical assault is fully supported with medical attention and psychological support, and that the NSW Government has invested $1 million in staff training.
