There are many cafes around town that claim to be gluten-free or offer options for those with dietary requirements, but only one place has been confirmed to be 100% free of gluten.
A study released last week in the Medical Journal of Australia found that one in 11 samples of food labelled ‘gluten free’ had enough levels of gluten contaminated within to cause harm to those with coeliac disease.
But now, Coeliac Australia has accredited Bayside Barista in Safety Bay as the sole cafe in Western Australia to not have even one crumb of gluten on a plate.
Owner’s Andrew and Kalina Franklin told The West the gluten-free menu came after their nephew, who suffers from coeliac disease, constantly struggled to order food when eating out.
“It is amazing to see diners who have coeliac disease read our menu and respond with a look of amazement, joy and happiness when they see they can eat anything in our cafe with confidence.”
