Perth has been included in a UK list of the most dangerous cities in the world, and it’s safe to say people are pretty confused by this revelation.
Perth was listed alongside a number of other cities including Kiev in Ukraine, Mogadishu in Somalia and San Pedro Sula in Honduras in a story by British tabloid The Sun.
The article states:
“A dark secret is lurking far from Australia's famous tourist hotspots.
“Crystal meth abuse Down Under has turned rural areas in Western Australia into what have been dubbed ‘Ice Towns’.
“The state’s largest city, Perth, sees its hospitals filled with addicts who commit crimes to fund their habit.
“Western Australia is also reported to have the purest form of the drug leading to fears users could accidentally overdose.”
Most commenters on social media seemed pretty surprised and confused by the claims.
“The newspaper seems to have made an unsophisticated connection between methamphetamine usage and the relative safety of cities around the world,” WA Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan told The West.
“While meth use continues to be a significant issue for the community, Perth remains a safe place to live and visit.”
