WA Police have confirmed this afternoon that there has been a case of strawberry sabotage in the state, making it a nationwide contamination concern.
York Police Station, west of Perth, was advised by a member of the public that he had found a needle in the sink while preparing strawberries for his family.
“WA Police Force can confirm that a member of the public today presented at York Police Station to report his concerns that a needle had been in a punnet of strawberries,” a police spokeswoman said.
“The member of the public advised he located the needle in his sink after preparing strawberries for his family.
“He did not recall the needle being in the sink prior to preparing the strawberries.”
The strawberry punnet in question was packaged and produced in Western Australia.
This comes just hours after the WA Health Minister Roger Cook said that people could be "very confident" in the safety of local strawberries.
It is the first confirmed case in WA.
