Three people had to be rescued after fallen power lines left them trapped in their cars for an hour at Waratah last night.
Cables came down outside the train station at about 6pm during an intense electrical storm.
Those inside the two cars were unable to move until the power could be switched off about an hour later.
The storm swept through most of the Hunter, cutting power to 1,200 homes in Belmont and Marks Point.
Cooranbong received about 40mm of rain in the space of an hour.
More wild weather is possible today, with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting potential storms this afternoon.
