The East End is slowly getting back to normal following the Newcastle 500.

Workers are well on track to removing most of the infrastructure around the street circuit by mid-December.

James Fletcher Park and the area near Newcastle Surf Club have been cleared, while the Nobbys and Horseshoe Beach carparks will be open again as early as this weekend.

Event Manager Kurt Sakzewski says most of the barriers are now off the road.

"We've got the barrier blocks off the streets in almost all of the residential areas," he said.

"At the end of three weeks we should have all those blocks gone and just some bits and pieces from the pit building."

Nobbys Road through to Watt Street is open to traffic with Shortland Esplanade one way southbound between Ocean Street and Watt Street.

Wharf Road remains closed to vehicles but the footpath between it and the harbour is open to cyclists and pedestrians.
