Dirt Bikes Seized In Police Crackdown

Police are making good progress in their crackdown on illegal dirt bike activity around Cessnock.

More than 50 bikes have been seized since Operation Rida began in January, resulting in several arrests.

Chief Inspector Dave Robinson said most of those bikes turned out to be stolen.

"60 per cent of the bikes have proven to be stolen and we've been able to return them to their rightful owners," he said.

Police say illegal dirt bike activity around Cessnock streets and parks is their most common public complaint.

"It's a problem statewide but it seems to be more acute here in Cessnock, which is why we've devoted the resources to overcome it," Chief Insp. Robinson said.

He said the operation is also putting a dent in the local drug trade, as the bikes are commonly being used to deliver illegal substances and amphetamines.
