Port Stephens Council has weighed in on the seaweed problem at Birubi Beach.
Huge matted clumps of seaweed washed ashore before the holiday period and has been rotting in the sun ever since - with beachgoers forced to put up with the fly and odour problem.
Community and Recreation Coordinator Brock Lamont says council won't be moving the clumps, as the tides will eventually take care of the problem.
“Seaweed which has dislodged and washed ashore is not unique to Port Stephens. Nor is the way which we have dealt with the situation,” he said.
“Our ability to remove any beached seaweed is extremely limited. With this in mind, our approach has always been to be let nature take its course.”
