Newcastle council has issued a warning to beachgoers after heavy swell exposed more than 20 tank traps on Stockton Beach.

The World War II relics span a 300m stretch from the Mission Australia Early Learning Centre to Corroba Oval, and may not be visible at high tide.

The public is being asked to stay away from the foreshore around the Mitchell Street seawall.

Meantime council's CEO Jeremy Bath has confirmed it's working with the State Government to sort out erosion issues at the beach, however it will be costly and could take some time.

"There is very little that can be done in the short term."

"Beach erosion requires a long-term solution, works in the vicinity of about 30 million dollars and works that'll take the best part of a year to put in place."
