The Weston man accused of lighting Tuesday's blaze at Kurri Kurri has been refused bail in Maitland Court.

26-year-old Craig Lambkin applied to be released into his father's custody, however a magistrate denied his application following a request by police.

The court heard Lambkin threw a lit cigarette into bush behind Kurri Kurri Aquatic Centre and was spotted riding from the scene on his bike as the fire took hold.

Lambkin denies intentionally lighting the fire, which came dangerously close to homes and businesses around Lang Street

He is yet to enter a formal plea and will return to court in March
