Woolworths says it will hand out free reusable bags for the next 10 days as its customers get used to its ban on single-use plastic bags.

The call comes just a week after Woolies stopped supplying bags.

Woolies stores in NSW, Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia stopped providing free single-use plastic bags last week and the offer of the reusable bags - which would normally cost 15 cents - will only apply in those states and until July 8.

"We understand it's a big change and we know that remembering your reusable bags every time you shop isn't easy," Woolworths said on its website on Friday.

Woolworths have polled 12,500 customers about the single-use plastic bag ban, News.com reports. Almost 75 per cent supported the transition to reusable bags, while less than 15 per cent were opposed to it.

There have been some reports of customers abusing staff over the bag ban, but Woolworths say the majority have been fine with the change.
