20 percent of honey on sale in Australia is fake, according to a new study.

Scientists at Macquarie University used 100 samples of honey, including 38 Australian branded honey amples.

Shockingly, researchers found almost one in five samples of Australian was not 100% honey – meaning it has been mixed with other substances.

It found 23 per cent of the nine samples tested in Tasmania were adulterated, one out of two samples sourced from NSW was adulterated, a third of the six samples sourced from Queensland weren't pure honey and 29 per cent of the seven samples sourced in Victoria were fake.

Almost half of the honey imported from Asia was also adulterated.

Currently only five per cent of honey imported is tested – and scientists say the testing methods to not detect common syrups used to dilute the honey.

Locally produced honey is not tested at all.
