Two Out Of Three Women Experience Sexual Harassment At Work

New research has shown that two-thirds of women have experienced sexual harassment at work in Australia, as well as more than one third of men.

A survey by the Australian Council of Trade Unions, with more than 9,600 responses, found that 64 per cent of women and 34 per cent of men had reported harassment.

Of this, more than 82 per cent of the harassers were men.

However, most of the behaviour has not been reported, with only 26.7 per cent lodging a formal complaint.

This was largely due to concern that reporting would have negative consequences.

"We need to change the rules. Sexual harassment is a workplace issue and people who experience it should be able to take it up through the workplace umpire," ACTU president Michele O'Neil said.

"We need access to fair, effective and efficient complaints mechanisms that support people who've been harassed, not punish them."
