A father from Victoria who drowned while helping another man rescue his children has been hailed as a hero.

Shaun Oliver, 32, ran into the water to help two children aged around 10 and 12 to safety after they got caught in a rip yesterday afternoon.

Their father had just rescued their two younger siblings, so Mr Oliver rushed in to assist with the rescue.

An off-duty paramedic managed to grab the 10-year-old while Mr Oliver tried to help the 12-year-old.

A surfer managed to grab the child, however Mr Oliver was swept out to sea.

When he was dragged to shore by three police officers, paramedics performed CPR but sadly Mr Oliver died in hospital.

"It was a heroic act that unfortunately cost him his life," NSW Detective Senior Sergeant Brad Ainsworth said.

Mr Oliver's family have released a statement about the matter.

“Shaun has sacrificed his future happiness and shared life with wife Carla and three beautiful children to do what none of us hope to do in this lifetime.. be tested,” his brother Nathanael said.

“Sadly not long before their 10 year anniversary, Shaun was faced with an ultimatum. He chose to protect those who could not protect themselves.

“And he, and his family, have paid a heavy price.”
