Calls for a review

There are calls for better regulation to protect rideshare drivers, with a new survey showing that safety is a big concern.

The Transport Workers' Union has said that drivers are afraid to report harassment and assault largely due to fear of reprisal from the rideshare companies.

The Union's director Tony Sheldon told the Hit Newsroom that it's a case of the government needing to step in to give drivers a voice.

"Eighty-five per cent of drivers aren't satisfied with their earnings because they're so low, and are arbitrarily changed by these companies," he said.

"On average, drivers earn $16 an hour, and we have survey results where drivers are getting as little as $7 an hour.

"Drivers have also faced death threats towards themselves and their families, rape threats, sexual assault, being punched in the face, held at knife-point, had car windows broken, the car stolen and have received racial abuse of the most horrendous nature.

"And yet they find themselves being deactivated by the rideshare app companies, on the basis of passengers making a complaint."
