Researchers Say They're One Step Closer To Finding A Cure For PCOS

Scientists believe they may be one step closer to finding a cause of polycystic ovary syndrome – commonly known as PCOS.

Researchers believe the syndrome, which is the most common hormonal condition affecting women of reproductive age, may be caused by a hormonal imbalance before birth.

Now researchers say they’ve been able to cure the condition in mice – using an IVF drug to control women’s hormones.

It’s believed this may help restore ovulation and eventually increase the pregnancy rate in these women.

What is PCOS?

Symptoms include:

  • irregular periods or no periods, which means ovaries don't regularly release eggs
  • difficulty getting pregnant
  • excessive hair growth caused by excess testosterone
  • weight gain
  • oily skin and acne

More than half of the women affected don't have any symptoms.
