Police have issued a reminder for anyone on their way for a spooky night this Halloween, urging Aussies to stay safe.

Drivers are urged to remember that there will be kids out on the streets trick or treating during peak hour.

NSW Highway Patrol Chief Inspector Phil Brooks has urged people to slow down and stay alert.

"If people are supervising their kids, we want them to make sure that they're using designated, light-controlled crossings where possible," he told the Hit Newsroom.

"They should make sure that their group stand out as much as possible by using torches and glow sticks so drivers can see the young people on the road."

Trick or treaters are advised to stick to houses that have decorations out the front, as not everyone is celebrating the holiday.

Damage to properties will also not be tolerated by police.
