A Queensland teenager accused of slashing a schoolgirl more than 20 times across the face is refusing to tell police what sparked the random attack.

The victim, 12, underwent surgery for serious wounds after a 17-year-old boy, who didn't know her, allegedly attacked her as she walked through a tunnel on her way to school at Logan on Thursday.

"He's exercised his right to silence. He hasn't given us any information but there is certainly evidence that to say that he is the offender," Detective Acting Inspector Grant Ralston told reporters.

He said a call to the CrimeStoppers hotline led police to a property at suburban Kingston late on Thursday, not far from where the attack occurred.

Police found clothing there which matched what the offender was said to be wearing.

The boy now facing charges was found on foot shortly afterwards in a nearby street. A box cutter was also found.

Stav, Abby & Matt spoke to a parent at the school:

He said the attack appeared to be random, and there was no link between the girl or the teenager, who was not a student at the girl's school.

The boy was charged with acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm. He will face the Children's Court but due to his age, those proceedings cannot be reported.
