Cyclists pushing to be allowed to ride on the footpath in Victoria and New South Wales.

Bicycle Network is pushing for the two states to change the laws to keep up with the rest of Australia, where riders of all ages are allowed to ride on the footpath.

Currently riders up to the age of 12 are allowed to ride on the footpath in Victoria while riders up to the age of 16 are allowed to ride on the footpath in New South Wales.

The Bicycle network say not allowing people to ride on the footpath discourages health living and kids from riding to school.  They also say the law separates children from their siblings.

Allowing adults to ride on the footpath means that less confident riders can avoid pinch points and merging with traffic, reducing their risk.

However a report from Victoria Walks, Vision Australia and the Council claims it’s more dangerous to have pedestrians and cyclists sharing a footpath.

“The research review found between 6 and 17 per cent of all cyclist crashes in Australia and New Zealand occurred on footpaths, even though footpath cycling was not allowed in most areas,” Victoria Walks executive officer Ben Rossiter told The Herald Sun.
