A Queensland man is distraught after his pet dog was grabbed and killed by a three metre crocodile.
Freckles the female kelpie cross was snatched by the croc at Wonga Beach, north of Cairns, on Tuesday.
"It all happened in a split second, but to me it happened in slow motion," the owner told the Cairns Post.
"A big crocodile came up behind her, grabbed her and just dived under the waves."
The owner waited by the edge of the water to see if the beloved dog would resurface, but after 15 minutes he spotted the croc moving away from the area.
Freckles' collar was then found on the beach nearby.
People are advised to stay away from this particular area, with the waters known to be infested with crocodiles.
"DES strongly reminds residents and visitors that no matter how many crocodiles have been removed, no waterway in croc country can ever be considered to be free of crocodiles," a Department of Environmental Sciences spokesperson said.
