New research has shown startling impact of not getting enough exercise, with results showing that a sedentary lifestyle is worse than smoking, diabetes or heart disease.

The study, published in the journal JAMA Network Open, also confirmed that any exercise is better than nothing at all, with those who do only a small amount of exercise still seeing a huge benefit to their health.

“Being unfit on a treadmill or in an exercise stress test has a worse prognosis, as far as death, than being hypertensive, being diabetic or being a current smoker," senior author of the study and cardiologist at Cleveland Clinic Dr Wael Jaber said.

"We've never seen something as pronounced as this and as objective as this."

The research has also resulted in experts making some interesting findings on the topic of over-exercising.

Where previous research suggested that overdoing it can increase the risk of death, this study claims that this is not the case - to the point that the senior author of the paper said that there is "no level of exercise or fitness that exposes you to risk".
