More than 1.6 million cars could still have potentially deadly airbags – prompting renewed calls for drivers to check their vehicles.

A $6 billion campaign called “Don’t Die Wondering” has been launched encouraging drivers to make sure their car doesn’t have the faulty airbags.

If deployed, some Takata airbags have a 50 per cent chance of spraying shrapnel in a crash. So far 24 people have died worldwide as a result of faulty airbags, and 266 people have been injured.

The campaign, which you’ll see on television screens right now, aims to find the affected vehicles. The ACCC hopes to have all vehicles fixed by the end of 2020.

Motorists can check if their vehicles are affected via IsMyAirbagSafe.com.auproductsafety.gov or text the word “Takata” to 0487 AIRBAG (0487 247 224) for further advice.
