A man has been jailed in Italy for posting fake reviews on TripAdvisor in what has been described as a huge legal decision for the internet.

According to news.com.au, the man sold fake, favourable reviews to clients across the country to bolster their online presence.

A criminal court in Italy sentenced the man to a nine-month jail stint over the ordeal, and he will have to pay $13,000.

“We see this as a landmark ruling for the internet,” TripAdvisor’s vice president and associate general counsel Brad Young said.

“Writing fake reviews has always been fraud, but this is the first time we’ve seen someone sent to jail as a result.”
