McDonald’s Australia has announced its will phase out plastic straws from its 970 restaurants around the country by 2020.

The fast food giant will now undertake the tough challenge of finding an alternative, with a trial of paper straws set to take place in two restaurants in August.

The announcement comes weeks after supermarkets banned plastic bags, while some coffee chains, such as Starbucks are offering increase discounts for customers who bring in their own cups.

McDonald’s is currently trialing cup recycling through a partnership with Simply Cups. The trial, which launched in April in eight restaurants, includes segmented dining room bins to separate liquids, plastics, paper cups and general waste.
