A UK-based blogger has learnt sometimes the best things in life aren’t exactly free after her request for a complimentary stay at a hotel in exchange for social media coverage massively backfired.
Elle Derby hoped her 80,000 YouTube followers would create enough leverage to score a free stay at the White Moose Café and Chareville Lodge in Dublin, all until owner Paul Stenson took to Facebook, the Daily Telegraph reports.
“Thank you for your email looking for free accommodation in return for exposure,” he wrote.
“It takes a lot of balls to send an email like that, if not much self-respect and dignity. If I let you stay here in return for a feature in your video, who is going to pay the staff who look after you? ... Lucky for us, we too have a significant social media following.”
Although Stenson didn’t name Derby in the post, the blogger outed herself in a massive 17 minute YouTube post where she hit back at the way she was treated by the hotel.
“I literally felt my heart sink to the bottom of my stomach,” the 22-year-old said.
The video prompted Mr Stenson to follow up with a number of posts to Facebook, where he thanked bloggers for the “absolutely priceless” publicity.
