A Gold Coast woman who passed away hours after giving birth has been remembered by heartbroken family and friends, who are now calling for donations to help cover funeral costs and support her grieving husband and children.
Imogen Petrak was 36 weeks pregnant when complications from an ear infection saw her struck down by a suspected strain of bacterial meningococcal, and tragically lose her life shortly after.
A GoFundMe page set-up by family friend Renee King has remembered her “biggest heart and sweetest loving spirit” as much-needed funds are raised for her family.
"Imogen was taken to hospital presenting an ear infection, this infection travelled to her brain, causing severe swelling," wrote Renee King.
“An emergency C Section was performed and baby Eleanor was born four-weeks premature. Eleanor is doing well but her mummy Imogen suffering catastrophic brain damage only hours later tragically passed away.
“Her husband John is now left a widower with their two babies, 17 month old JB and new prem baby Eleanor.
“I am in awe at his strength, his outlook, despite such unthinkable circumstances his faith is so unwavering.”
Since setting up the campaign on the weekend, Ms King has managed to raise $74,383 in donations of her $100,000 fundraising goal.
“My goal is to raise enough funds for John and his children to help cover funeral costs and to give him a buffer over the next year whilst he is figuring out how to navigate this new life he's been dealt as single daddy to these two beautiful needy babies,” she added.
“Their lives have been completely turned upside down. How do you tell your baby that mummy isn't coming home?
"I just can't fathom the pain and headache, the loss that is being felt right now.”
